<p>Merseyside Police is appealing for witnesses after a man was
arrested for sexually assaulting a young woman in Liverpool city
centre early this morning.</p>

<p>The woman was walking along Hanover Street at around 6.30am when
she was approached by a man who asked her for directions to a
nearby hotel.</p>

<p>He then followed her and made further attempts to talk to her.
As she then walked down Duke Street Lane he confronted her and
pushed her against a wall before sexually assaulting her.</p>

<p>The woman fought back and ran off to seek help. A 29-year-old
man was arrested later that morning at a city centre hotel on
suspicion of sexual assault and remains in custody at this
time.</p>

<p>Detectives investigating the incident have viewed extensive CCTV
from this part of the city centre and believe several people may
have witnessed the incident itself or seen the offender moments
before or after it took place.</p>

<p>Detective Inspector Julie Milburn from St Anne Street CID, said:
"This was a deeply unpleasant and upsetting incident for this young
woman and she is at home being looked after by her family. It is
also thankfully a rare occurance in the city centre and one that we
are taking extremely seriously.</p>

<p>"We have arrested a man on suspicion of this assault but we are
appealing for other witnesses to come forward.</p>

<p>"We believe that he may have approached other women in the area
at this time. The offender is believed to have been wearing a blue
collared t-shirt and dark jeans. This happened just off a busy city
centre street at a time of day when many people will have been
commuting to work or finishing a night shift.</p>

<p>"From our CCTV enquiries we believe that pedestrians have been
in the Hanover Street, Duke Street and Argyle Street area and may
have seen something untoward going on.</p>

<p>"We also believe a motorist in a red Audi was parked nearby at
traffic lights and also that several service wagons passed close by
and may have witnessed the incident. We are keen to hear from those
people, as well as any others, to find out if they saw or heard
anything that could help us in this investigation. "</p>

<p>Detectives investigating the murder of 46-year-old Nicholas
Ayers are reappealing for information on the third anniversary of
his death.</p>

<p>Merseyside Police is reoffering a £20,000 reward leading to the
capture, arrest and conviction of the person, or people,
responsible for the murder of Mr Ayers.</p>

<p>Nicholas Ayers, who was known to his friends as Nicky, was
murdered in the early hours of Thursday, 29 April 2010. Emergency
services were called at around 12.10am to South Cantril Avenue,
West Derby, following reports of shots being fired.</p>

<p>When officers arrived at the scene they found the body of
Nicholas Ayers, who managed the Western Approaches football team,
and he was pronounced dead at the scene by ambulance staff.</p>

<p>At the same time a light coloured (possibly silver) car was seen
to exit from Snowberry Road onto Princess Drive in the direction of
Finch Lane. The vehicle performed an immediate u-turn and drove
back into Snowberry road.</p>

<p>Detective Inspector Rob Hill, said: "Nicholas's death has had a
devastating effect on his family. They all miss him greatly and we
want to bring the people responsible to justice.</p>

<p>"I would hope that the passing of time will enable people to
search their consciences and find the courage to come forward to
tell us what they know. We understand that people are sometimes
reluctant to come forward in the aftermath of such a serious crime
as this.</p>

<p>"I would urge anyone with information to come forward either
directly to the team of dedicated officers or anonymously through
Crimestoppers in the strictest of confidence. No matter how small
the piece of information is, it may be essential in identifying
those responsible.</p>

<p>"We are also still keen to speak to anyone who may have seen a
motorcycle being driven in the area around the time of the
incident. We will always respond to fresh information and remain
committed to bringing the offenders to justice.</p>

<p>"Three years on, people may have moved from the area or may be
in a different situation from then and now feel in a position to
talk to the police. If this is you, I would urge you to come
forward, you could provide vital answers that we so want to give to
Mr Ayers' family.</p>

<p>"We remain committed to finding those responsible for Nicholas'
death and anyone who thinks they can help should contact Merseyside
Police on 0151 777 8617 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555
111."&nbsp;</p>
