Appeal - attempted armed robbery - Loweswater Way, Kirkby

Merseyside Police is appealing for help to trace a customer at a convenience store in Kirkby who may have vital information about an attempted armed robbery on Monday, 31 March, 2014.

Officers were called to Lifestyle Express Convenience Store on Loweswater Way, at around 7.45pm, following a report that a man had walked into the shop armed with what's described as a small, grey handgun.

He threatened the owner of the shop, who was closing up, and demanded cash. The owner then challenged him and the offender ran off empty handed. He was last seen heading along Windermere Drive onto Bank Lane.

Patrols attended and enquiries were carried out, including a search of the surrounding area. CCTV has been located and is being reviewed.

Detective Inspector Andy Milligan said: "The offender didn't hesitate to confront the shopowner with what appeared to be a firearm.

"His actions were both reckless and dangerous and we are determined to bring the person responsible to justice.

"We believe another man was being served at the counter whilst the attempted robbery was taking place and I'd appeal to him to come forward and speak to us as he may have vital information which could help with our inquiries.

"If you were the customer in the shop, or if you have information which could help us with our enquiries, please call detectives in Knowsley CID on 0151 777 6562 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111."

Note - a 21-year-old man from the Kirkby area was arrested on suspicion of robbery on Thursday, 3 April then further arrested on suspicion of possessing a prohibited weapon. He has since been released on police bail pending further enquiries.
