South Yorkshire Police - Operation Lollipop

Fifteen people alleged to have taken part in a cash-for-crash scam totalling tens of thousands of pounds are due to appear at Sheffield Magistrates' Court from 2pm today, 7 February.

The defendants, who come from a number of areas in England and Wales, are said to have conspired together with other persons to defraud insurance companies between 1 January and 31 July, 2011.

The case - dubbed Operation Lollipop - involves a South Yorkshire Police investigation into the activities of an accident claims company called City Claims 4 U, based at Pitsmoor Road, Sheffield, and run by defendents Mohammed Omar Gulzar (also called Bobby) and Shoaib Nawaz, assisted by Liam Howden and Saeeda Bi Ali.

Inquiries began after a bus collided with the rear of a car at Scott Road, Burngreave, Sheffield, on 17 June, 2011.

Officers worked closely with the Insurance Fraud Bureau, a London-based, industry organisation, during the investigation.

On 3 October, 2011, police executed warrants at a number of addresses linked to City Claims 4 U after officers received information that it had been submitting fraudulent claims to insurance companies, which were boosted by alleged false claims for the hiring out of replacement vehicles. These were made under the name Rent a Car 4 U, using invoices headed CCC Hire 4 U.
