A second firearm was recovered by officers carrying out open land searches in Wavertree.
During a search of Wavertree sports park yesterday (Sunday) two viable handguns were found together with what is believed to be a quantity of Class A drugs.
Both weapons have been recovered for forensic examination and enquiries remain ongoing.
Detective Inspector John Fitzgerald said: “Every weapon we recover is one less out there on the streets that could be used to cause fear, intimidation or harm.”
