Mersey Fire and Rescue Service were called to reports of a fire at the former Ravenhead Club on Alexandra Drive, St Helens, at 12.55am today, Wednesday 30th June.
A joint investigation is currently underway. The cause of the fire, which caused significant damage to the building, is currently being treated as suspected malicious ignition.
Forensic enquiries are being carried out at the scene together with CCTV and witness enquiries.
Detective Inspector Leanne Hobin said: “Enquiries are in the very early stages but at this stage it is being treated as suspected malicious ignition.
“I would ask anyone who has any information which could assist the investigation to DM @MerPolCC or @CrimestoppersUK on 0800 555 111 quoting reference 21000455023.”
