We recovered a handgun after officers stopped a male on an electric bike in Fairfield.
At just before midnight last night, Sunday 10th October, officers attempted to stop the male on Balmoral Road. The male made off but was stopped a short distance away.
As he was being detained officers recovered a handgun and arrested the male, aged 22, on suspicion of possession of a section one firearm and suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle.
The handgun, which is believed to be viable, has been recovered for forensic examination.
The male currently remains in custody where he will be questioned.
Detective Inspector John Fitzgerald, of the Firearms Investigation Team said: “ This was a significant recovery and means that there is one less firearm on the streets which could be used to cause fear or intimidation.
“I would urge anyone who has information about who is carrying weapons or where they are being stored to contact us so that we can taken positive action and bring those responsible to justice.”
Anyone with information is asked to DM @MerPolCC or @CrimestoppersUK on 0800 555 111.
