We have arrested a man on suspicion of various offences following a theft in Birkenhead in the early hours of this morning, Tuesday 5 October.
At around 12.20am, officers were called to Wirral Way Service Station on Borough Road to reports of a Mini being stolen from the forecourt.
With the assistance of the National Police Air Service (NPAS) helicopter, a search was carried out of the area and the car was found to have crashed in Park Road South.
Further enquiries led to a man being detained at a nearby address.
A 35-year-old man from Rock Ferry was arrested on suspicion of aggravated vehicle taking; dangerous driving; disqualified driving; and failing to provide a specimen for analysis. He remains in custody for questioning.
Detective Inspector Barbara Hebden said: “This would have been a shocking incident to have experienced or witnessed and thankfully nobody was injured during the theft or the driving which followed.
“Although a man is in custody, we’re still keen to speak to anyone who saw the incident or captured anything on CCTV, dashcam or other devices as we continue to investigate.”
