Officers have closed the East Lancashire Road in both directions between Stonebridge Lane, Croxteth, and Lower Lane, following a serious injury road traffic collision near to the Stonedale Retail Park.
The incident happened at about 7.25pm when a 13-year-old boy was in collision with a silver Vauxhall Astra estate near to the Showcase cinema. The driver of the car stopped at the scene and is assisting with the investigation.
The boy, whose condition is described as critical, has been taken to hospital, where he is being treated for his injuries.
The East Lancashire Road will remain closed between Stonebridge Lane and Lower Lane whilst the Roads Policing team carry out examinations at the scene.
