A man was arrested following an assault outside a pub in St Helens in the early hours of Saturday morning, 16 July.
At around 12.45am it was reported that a man in his 50s had been assaulted by two men outside the Springfield Hotel in Thatto Heath and suffered a head injury.
It was reported that the men left the scene in a taxi.
The victim is in hospital in a serious but stable condition.
A 67-year-old man from Thatto Heath was arrested on Saturday and has been released pending further enquiries.
CCTV and witness enquiries into the incident are ongoing, and anyone with any information is asked to contact police.
