We are appealing for information following a stabbing on a main road in Wavertree today (Wednesday, 29 June).
At around 4.35pm officers were called to Smithdown Road after receiving reports that a 19-year-old man had been stabbed in the leg during a fight involving a group of men.
The victim has been taken to hospital for treatment for his injury which is believed to be serious, but not life threatening.
An investigation is underway and officers will remain in the area to carry out forensic, CCTV, house-to-house and witness enquiries. High visibility patrols will also be in the area to reassure the local community.
Smithdown Road is currently closed at the junctions with Tunnel Road, Lodge Lane and Hartington Road, whilst crime scene investigations are carried out. We would ask motorists to avoid the area and find alternative routes while we deal with this incident.
Chief Inspector Jim Wilde said: “Enquiries are in the very early stages to establish what has taken place. We do believe that those involved are known to each other. Smithdown Road will have been very busy at the time of this incident and I would appeal to anyone who was the upper end of Smithdown Road, close to Lodge Lane and Newstead Road at around 4.30pm and saw what happened to please contact us.
“I would also ask people who were in the area to check dashcam or CCTV footage just in case they may have captured something which may be vital to the case.”
Anyone with information is asked to DM @MerPolCC or @CrimestoppersUK on 0800 555 111 quoting reference 685 of 29 June.
