We have arrested a man following an incident in Kirkdale this afternoon, Friday 24 June.
At around 12.45pm we received a report that a man was discharging a crossbow onto Celia Street.
Armed officers attended and a 54-year-old man was quickly detained and arrested on suspicion of attempted Section 18 Wounding and Affray.
He was taken into custody and will be questioned by police.
Officers have seized the crossbow and it is being forensically examined.
No injuries were reported but people in the area were left extremely shaken by the incident.
An investigation into the incident has been launched, including CCTV, forensic and house to-house enquiries.
Road closures are in place on Celia Street while enquiries are carried out and motorists are advised to seek alternative routes.
Inspector Martin Mannion said: “Thanks to the quick actions of our officers, the man was detained and his weapon recovered before any harm was caused to members of the public.
“Nonetheless, this would have been an extremely shocking incident for anyone to witness and our officers are currently carrying out extensive enquiries to establish the full circumstances.
“If you were in the area at the time of the incident and saw anything then please let us know – all information you hold could be vital to our investigation.
“We will not tolerate those who use dangerous weapons to cause fear and harm in our communities, so please tell us what you know to keep our streets safer.”
