A man has been charged with robbery following an incident outside a supermarket in St Helens last week.
On Tuesday 26 April it was reported an 86-year-old woman had an attempt made to grab her handbag outside Asda on Kirkland Street causing her to stumble. The suspect then took her purse and house keys from it.
A member of the public chased the offender, and the purse and house keys were recovered having been discarded by the suspect.
Although the victim didn’t sustain any injuries, she was left very shaken by the incident and is being supported by officers.
Stephen Paul Carmody, 39 years, of College Street in St Helens was arrested the next day (Wednesday 27 April) and has been charged with robbery.
He has been remanded in custody and will appear at Liverpool Crown Court on Thursday 26 May.
