We can confirm that a suspected firearm and ammunition have been seized following an open land search in Mossley Hill last night, Tuesday 29 August.
The gun, which was found on Elmswood Road, has been forensically recovered and will now be tested to confirm if it’s a viable firearm.
Detectives have now opened a full investigation, which includes CCTV and forensic enquiries in the local area. If you have any information that could help the ongoing enquiries, please get in touch.
Detective Sergeant Astbury said: “Every weapon we seize makes our communities safer and this gun was stored with ammunition, which could have been used to cause serious harm. We will now conduct forensic work to establish if this is a weapon which has been used before and who has had it in their possession.
“We are determined to disrupt and bring to justice the organised crime groups who possess firearms and seem intent on causing harm and fear in our communities.
“We rely on community intelligence to discover where weapons are being stored and who is using them and I would ask that the public continue to be our eyes and ears.
"We act on information from local residents to take such positive action so I would encourage anyone who knows where firearms and other weapons are being stored, carried and used to let us know and we will do the rest.”
If you have got any information about the use or storage of weapons please DM @MerPolCC or @CrimestoppersUK on 0800 555 111.
