We are continuing to appeal for witnesses following a fail-to-stop collision in Maghull yesterday, Wednesday 27th December.
We were contacted at 6.55am following reports a cyclist had been in collision with a car on Northway, close to the Shell petrol station.
The car, a gunmetal grey Skoda Octavia, failed to stop at the scene and urgent enquiries were made to trace the vehicle and its driver.
As a result of these enquiries the vehicle was recovered yesterday afternoon in the Southport area.
A 49-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving whilst unfit through drugs, failing to stop and report an injury road traffic collision.
He was interviewed by detectives last night and has since been bailed pending further enquiries.
The 55-year-old male cyclist remains in hospital with life threatening injuries and his family are being supported by a specially trained family liaison officer.
Detective Sergeant Kurt Timpson, lead investigating officer from Merseyside Police Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU), said: “We launched an investigation following this collision and our thoughts are with the victim and his family as they await updates on his condition.
“My team have worked tirelessly to gather early evidence to assist with our investigation and get answers for the man’s family.
“We can now confirm that the vehicle, a dark grey Skoda Octavia, registered in 2007, travelled along the M57 prior to this collision. It then joined Northway in the general direction of Lancashire. The vehicle was in collision with the cyclist just prior to the Shell Petrol Station on Northway.
“I would therefore urge anyone using those roads at the time to check their dashcam footage. Often cameras will record things that you may not be aware of, and we are keen to capture any such footage to assist our investigation. In addition, anyone who lives on Northway whose properties are fitted with CCTV or video doorbells and who have not yet been contacted by police are asked to review their footage. Any evidence, however insignificant it may appear could be vital to our enquiries.”
Anyone with information is asked to contact the MATRIX Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) on (0151) 777 5747, or email [email protected], quoting reference number 23001323988.
