UPDATE: Following enquiries, we believe the woman’s injury in this incident was caused following a fall.
She remains in a critical condition in hospital. The 24-year-old woman arrested on suspicion of assault has been released on conditional bail pending further enquiries.

We are appealing for information following a reported assault in Liverpool city centre in the early hours of this morning (Thursday 16 February).
At around 2.50am, we received a report that a woman in her 20s had been assaulted on Mathew Street by another woman.
The victim sustained a serious head injury and was taken to hospital where she remains in a critical condition.
We have arrested a 24-year-old woman on suspicion of assault. She is currently in police custody.
