We are appealing for information following a serious assault in Bootle last night, Friday 17 November.
At around 8.30pm, it was reported that a group of males were fighting on the corner of Marsh Lane and Stanley Road.
Emergency services attended and two men, aged 36 and 52, were arrested on suspicion of section 18 assault and taken to hospital for treatment to head injuries.
It was reported that one of the men had been assaulted with a baseball bat and the other had been hit with an axe.
They both remain in hospital in serious but stable conditions.
Officers remain in the area to carry out house-to-house and CCTV enquiries as part of the ongoing investigation.
Chief Inspector David Currie said: “This was a serious assault that has left two men in hospital with serious head injuries.
“Although we have arrested two men, an investigation is ongoing as we seek to establish what has taken place and we are carrying out a number of lines of enquiry including speaking to witnesses and examining CCTV footage.
“We understand that the local community will be concerned by this incident, we please be assured that we are taking this incident extremely seriously and I am appealing to anyone with information to please come forward.
“If you live in the area or were driving past at the time of the incident, please review your CCTV or dashcam footage to see if you captured anything. If you did, please let us know as soon as possible."
