We have detained two men after a report a man was struck with a hammer in Kirkdale today (Sunday 4 August).
Officers were called just after 1.35pm to a report three men had struck a man in his 20s to the head with a hammer in an alleyway on Wykeham Street.
The victim has been taken to hospital for treatment and his condition is described as stable.
It is believed the attack was racially-motivated and following enquiries, two men were detained nearby.
Detective Inspector Steve Street said: “This was a completely unprovoked attack on an innocent person by a small group of males.
“The victim was struck twice to the head with a hammer in what we are treating as a racially motivated attack and is currently receiving hospital treatment.
“Anyone who saw or heard any part of the incident is asked to contact police so that those responsible can be brought to justice.”
