** UPDATE - A man in his 20s has come forward and identified himself as the cyclist and was due to attend hospital to be checked over. The arrested man remains in custody.**
An investigation is underway following a serious road traffic collision on Walton Vale this evening (Wednesday, 28 August).
Emergency services were called at 8.28pm to a report that a cyclist had been knocked off his bike by a black Mercedes, on Walton Vale near to the Windsor pub.
Officers attended the area and located the car involved in the collision and the driver a short while later. A 48-year-old man from Melling has been arrested on suspicion of drink drive, dangerous driving and driving with no insurance and has been taken to a police station where he will be interviewed.
There was significant damage to the windscreen of the car and officers are concerned for the welfare of the cyclist.
Sgt Martin Mayne from the Roads Policing Unit, said: "We are appealing for the cyclist to contact us so we can be reassured that he is okay. A number of people who witnessed the collision are assisting police. Officers are also appealing to anyone who has CCTV, or doorbell, footage that captured the incident to come forward, they are particularly interested in talking to any motorists who were in the area who may have dashcam footage of the incident.
