A Dispersal Zone has been introduced in Woodchurch this evening (Tuesday 17 December) following reports of anti-social behaviour in the area.
The Dispersal order is in place from 3.45pm today (Tuesday 17 December) and will remain active for a period of 24 hours.
The dispersal zone has been brought in under Section 34/35 of the Anti-Social Behaviour & Policing Act 2014, which gives police officers the powers to direct people engaging in anti-social behaviour or are likely to become involved in such incidents and not return for up to 48 hours. Officers also have the power to seize items used for anti-social behaviour. Should a person who has previously been directed to leave but returns to the area, then an offence would be committed, and they may be arrested.
The measure is in response to reports of anti-social behaviour associated with a funeral that took place today.
Superintendent Karl Baldwin said: “We understand the important context of any funeral in our community, and that people will want to mark the passing of people in their own ways.
“A young man lost his life in tragic circumstances, and we know the shock and grief his family and friends must feel.
"Whilst we will always take a proportionate and sensitive approach to how we police the impact of such events, we will not tolerate reckless and dangerous behaviour, especially when that behaviour impacts others going about their daily business.
“Not only is such behaviour against the law and risks the safety of those involved and other road users, but it may even cause added stress to loved ones mourning their tragic loss.
"We will continue to identify and detain anyone in the area who is causing danger and distress on the roads.”
As a result of reports earlier today, two Land Rovers were seized and their drivers issued with Traffic Offence Reports. An off-road motorcycle and a quad bike were seized.
A 21-year-old man from Birkenhead was arrested for three beaches of a Criminal Behaviour Order and a 34-year-old woman from Woodchurch was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly.
They have been taken into custody for questioning.
Supt Baldwin added: “We have increased patrols in the area to deal with any issues, and this dispersal zone gives officers extra powers to approach people they suspect may be there to commit anti-social behaviour or other crimes.
“It is not in place to bother anyone wishing to lawfully pay their respects. It is in place to ensure residents and businesses are not subjected to anti-social and criminal behaviour, and I would ask people to continue reporting any concerns and we will take action.”
Anyone who wishes to report anti-social or criminal behaviour can contact @MerPolCC, 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. Always call 999 in an emergency.
