A man has been arrested following a fire inside a flat Birkenhead in the early hours of this morning, Wednesday 4 December.
At around 5.30am, we received a report that a flat was on fire and a man was seen smashing the headlights of a car with a baseball bat on Laird Street. No injuries were reported.
The suspect made off but was detained nearby and was found in possession of a knife.
A 45-year-old man from Birkenhead was arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life, criminal damage, possession of an offensive weapon in a public place and theft of a motor vehicle.
He is still in police custody to be questioned.
A joint investigation between Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service and Merseyside Police is ongoing and anyone with any information is asked to contact police.
