Man charged with rape in Liverpool

Detectives investigating a reported rape in Liverpool have charged a man.

We received a report that in the early hours of Sunday 1 December, a woman had been raped at an address in Anfield.

Amponsah Thompson, 27 years, of Rocky Lane in Anfield has been charged with rape of a woman aged 16 years and over.

He will appear at Wirral Adult Remand Court today, Thursday 5 December.

The victim is receiving support from specialised officers.

Detective Inspector Leanne Toole said: “We reach out to all survivors of rape and other serious sexual violence to come forward and speak to us. We are here when you are ready and will provide you will all the support necessary.

“We are committed to making safer spaces for women and girls and will relentless pursue those who perpetrate these heinous crimes against members of our community.

“We work closely with partner organisations such as Victim care Support Service, RASA and RASASC who are there to provide essential emotional support throughout.”

For women who have felt or feel unsafe in public spaces the Home Office has set up a pilot service (StreetSafe | Police.uk (www.police.uk)  for anyone to anonymously report public places where they have felt or feel unsafe, because of environmental issues, eg street lighting, abandoned buildings or vandalism and/or because of some behaviours, eg being followed or verbally abused.
