Section 60 order introduced in city centre

We can confirm that a Section 60 Order has been introduced in Liverpool city centre and surrounding areas today (Saturday 3 August).
 
The Section 60 Order was put in place at midday and will stay active for a 12-hour period until midnight, and extra officers will be in the area to provide a visible presence to reassure communities.
 
It has been introduced to prevent incidents of disorder and criminality.

The Order, under S60 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994, gives officers enhanced powers to stop and search individuals in the area and is designed to prevent serious violence.

The area incorporates Liverpool city centre and also includes areas of Kensington and Toxteth.

Superintendent Dawn McNally said: “A number of Section 60s have been introduced in Merseyside since the disgraceful disorder we witnessed in Southport on Tuesday evening.
 
“They give officers on the ground extra powers to stop and search anyone suspected of carrying weapons or planning any criminality as we seek to keep the public safe.
 
“People and business owners in the Liverpool area will see a highly visible police presence today. I hope their continued presence is reassuring, and I would ask anyone with concerns to speak to our officers.

“We will continue to deploy Section 60 orders wherever we believe they can help our efforts to keep people safe.”
