Three firearms found during search warrant in Melling

Three firearms including a skorpion machine pistol were found by officers at an industrial unit in Melling.

At around 9.40pm yesterday (Tuesday 6 February) officers carried out a search warrant at the industrial unit and found several stolen motorbikes, two viable self-loading pistols and a skorpion machine pistol with a quantity of 9mm rounds.

Armed response firearms officers and crime scene investigators remained at the unit overnight to safely remove the weapons.

Detective Inspector John Mullen said: “Three firearms that could have been used to cause significant fear or harm in our community has been seized thanks to our officers who quickly found and safely removed the dangerous weapons.

“Every weapon we seize makes our communities safer and these guns were stored inside a place where people work which could have caused serious harm in the area. 

“We will now conduct forensic work to establish if this is a weapon which has been used before and who has had it in their possession.

“We are determined to disrupt and bring to justice the organised crime groups who possess firearms and seem intent on causing violence and fear in our communities.

“Our officers will continue to target criminals, thoroughly examine any evidence and carry out the necessary warrants to prevent such crimes that can destroy our communities. We also rely on community intelligence to discover where weapons are being stored and who is using them and I would ask that the public continue to be our eyes and ears.”
