A firearm and ammunition has been recovered after it was found on open land in Kirkdale yesterday, Thursday 5 September.
At around 11.50am officers conducted an open land search on Melrose Road and found a shotgun and five rounds of ammunition inside a bag hidden under a bush.
The shotgun has been made safe and is being forensically tested.
Detective Inspector John Mullen from the Firearms Investigation Team said: “This latest find just goes to show that criminals will hide weapons anywhere. In this case, a lethal weapon could have ended up in a child’s hands.
“Thankfully this firearm has been safely recovered and it can no longer be used to cause fear or harm in our community.”
If you have got any information about the use or storage of weapons please DM @MerPolCC or @CrimestoppersUK on 0800 555 111.
