We arrested a 36-year-old man on suspicion of possession of a knife blade in a public place following an incident in St Helens in the early hours of this morning, Friday 6 September.
Officers were on patrol at the junction of Westfield Street and Linkway West at around 12.25am when they approached a man to check on his welfare. Upon searching the man, he was found in possession of a number of knives.
The officers attempted to arrest the man who then made off. They gave chase and he was detained on Linkway West.
The man was arrested on suspicion of possession of a bladed article in a public place, assault by beating of an emergency worker and common assault of an emergency worker. He is currently in custody.
During the arrest one of the police officers was spat at in the eyes and mouth.
St Helens local policing Inspector Josh Griffiths said: “Thanks to the quick thinking of the officers at scene this man was detained, and the knives seized.
“Unfortunately during this incident one of the officers was spat at.
“Our police officers and staff understand the risks of the job, but they should never have to tolerate violence against them when they are simply attempting to carry out their duties.”
