Two men from St Helens jailed for fighting inside town centre bar

Two men from St Helens have been jailed for fighting inside a town centre bar in the middle of the day.

James Rennie, 33, of Parbold Avenue, in St Helens, and Philip Roughsedge, 37, of Luther Grove, in St Helens, both appeared at Liverpool Crown Court yesterday, Thursday 6 February.

Rennie was jailed for 12 months after admitting affray and Roughsedge was sentenced to 20 months after admitting affray and also breaching a Criminal Behaviour Order.

At around 1.50pm on Friday 6 December 2024, Rennie and Roughsedge were involved in a fight inside Buzzby’s, on Westfield Street.

The incident, which occurred in front of customers including children, involved both men punching each other and at one point Roughsedge used a barstool as a weapon.

Detective Inspector Richard Shillito said: “This was a shocking incident that happened in front of lots of customers, including children, in the middle of the day.

“This type of violence has absolutely no place in our community and I’m glad to see that both men will now spend time in prison to reflect on their appalling actions.

“We want people to feel safe when they go out and enjoy our town centre so it’s positive that Rennie and Roughsedge are now off our streets.”
