Today, Thursday 9 January, local neighbourhood officers have charged a woman with theft after a mobile phone was stolen in Liverpool city centre.
On Sunday 5 January we received a report a mobile phone was stolen from a woman’s pocket near Williamson Square.
Following an investigation the Neighbourhood Policing Team in the City Centre have arrested and charged a woman.
Mirella Ion, 19 years, of Altcar Avenue in Wavertree, has been charged with theft from person.
Sergeant Craig Winstanley, who is lead for lead for Operation Ghost, said: “Merseyside Police take this type of crime seriously as it can have a significant impact on the victim. Mobile phones may contain photographs of family, friends and other memories that the victim may lose following a theft.
“In response to these offences, the City Centre Neighbourhood Policing Team launched Operation Ghost to target offenders committing these crimes. Since its launch, the team have targeted offenders from not just within Merseyside, but we have also travelled across the north west and beyond in pursuit of those responsible. We’ll continue to work with our partners to reduce offences and protect victims.”
From Operation Ghost, Constable Sam Downey added: “We have reduced the number of this type of theft from year to year, however we will not be complacent in our approach. Last year we rolled out mobile phone marking kits to the public so they can be protected from theft and other crime prevention measures. Let me be clear, pickpocketing will not be tolerated in Liverpool city centre.”
