We are appealing for information after a man has sadly died following a road collision in Huyton yesterday afternoon, Wednesday 5 March.
Officers were called to the junction of Tarbock Road and Manley Road at 12.20pm to reports of a serious collision involving a male cyclist who was riding a blue mountain bike and a black Volkswagen ID5 car.
Sadly the cyclist, a man in his 60s, was pronounced deceased after suffering serious injuries.
A post mortem will be carried out to establish his cause of death.
The driver failed to stop at the scene and following inquiries an abandoned vehicle, which is believed to have been involved in the incident, was found on Greenfield Drive.
A 34-year-old man from Liverpool was subsequently arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and other associated road traffic offences. He remains in police custody for questioning by detectives.
Multiple road closures were put in place and these were reopened later in the evening.
Detective Sergeant Andy Roper, Lead Investigating Officer from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said “Our thoughts and condolences are with the family of the man who sadly lost his life following the collision yesterday afternoon. His family have been informed and are being supported by our specially trained family liaison officers.
“I would like to thank the local community for their help so far with this investigation, including those who helped at the scene. I would also like to thank the community for their patience while we kept multiple roads closed to carry out evidential work at various scenes.
“We have launched an investigation into the man’s death, and it is now a priority for us to get answers on how the collision occurred and my team are working to establish key facts.”
Detective Sergeant Roper added: “Although a man has been arrested in connection with this incident, I would urgently appeal to anyone who witnessed it to please contact us. Any information no matter how small could be vital to our investigation, so please get in touch.
"This collision happened at busy time of day on a busy road, so I would appeal directly to anyone who saw anything and who we haven’t yet spoken to with my team to please get in touch. I would also ask motorists to please check your dashcam footage to urgently review it. These devices can often capture key evidence in the moments leading up to the collision without the driver of the vehicle being aware. Any help we receive, no matter how insignificant it may seem, could assist our investigation.
"Finally, we know that the vehicle involved in this collision has been driven in the local area immediately prior to, and after, this incident. I would appeal to any homeowners or businesses with CCTV systems to either check for the black Volkswagen ID5 car or contact our team so that we can provide you with a link to allow us to check the footage. Any CCTV showing this car around the time of this incident may be crucial to our investigation to try and enable us to provide answers to the man’s family.”
