We have seized a suspected viable firearm after it was found by a member of the public in Everton.
At around 3.20pm on Friday 28 February, it was reported that a gun had been discovered in a plastic bag on Rose Vale, next to Everton Park.
Officers attended the scene and the weapon was seized. It will now be forensically tested to confirm if it’s a viable firearm.
Detective Inspector John Mullen from our Firearms Investigation Team (FIT) said: “This weapon was found by a member of the public in a busy area when there would have been lots of people, including children walking home from school.
“This shows the complete disregard that those involved in serious organised crime have for the majority of our communities. They don’t care about a gun being left on the street for simply anyone to find.
"Thanks to the prompt actions of the person who found it, we were able to take a suspected firearm off our streets.
"We know that offenders involved in serious and organised crime sometimes use public spaces to hide firearms so that they can distance the gun from themselves and avoid being caught by police.
“Leaving viable weapons in open public spaces is despicable and could put innocent members of the public at risk and that is one of the reasons why we are relentless in our pursuit of these toxic individuals.
"We are committed to taking guns off our streets and if you know where people are storing guns, or who is involved in gun crime I would urge you to contact us. Help us to make your streets safer."
