Liverpool man jailed for city centre assault

We have today, Monday 1st August, welcomed the sentencing of a Liverpool man to four years and eight months in prison following an assault in Liverpool city centre.
At around 11pm on 13th April this year a 17 year-old male and his girlfriend, who were visiting the city, were walking along Chapel Street when Peter McHale came up to the teenager and struck him to the face.
He then chased the teenager to the Mercure Hotel where he assaulted him again. McHale left the scene shortly afterwards and took the victim’s coat and other items with him.
The victim suffered a broken jaw and was taken to hospital to receive treatment.
McHale, of Union Street, Liverpool city centre, was arrested and charged with assault, robbery and theft.
He was today, at Liverpool Crown Court, jailed for four years and four months for the offences plus an additional four months as the offences were committed while he was on licence.
He was also given an extended licence of three years.
Detective Constable Kate Metters said: “This was a nasty and unprovoked assault on a young man and his girlfriend who were visiting the city on an overnight city break.
“The victim suffered a serious facial injury and is still suffering the effects of McHale’s actions.
“I am pleased that McHale is now behind bars starting a prison sentence and that his sentence reflects on how seriously such incidents are viewed by the police and the courts.
“Liverpool is a very safe city to live, work and visit and I want members of the public to feel reassured that we will do everything within our powers to find the people responsible for committing such cowardly crimes and bringing them to justice.”
