I’m Andy Lloyd – your Community Inspector for Tuebrook, Kensington, Old Swan, West Derby, Yew Tree, and Knotty Ash. This is my first time writing a blog (but hopefully not the last) as the inspector responsible for where you live. It’s Neighbourhood Policing week – which is where you, hopefully, get to know some of your local bobbies better. So, here’s a few bits about me and what I do for you.
My family served for City of Liverpool Police and Merseyside Police, so you might think I’d always wanted to be a police officer, but, amongst lots of other things, I wanted to be a volcanologist when I was growing up. I tried lots of things – including teaching – but ultimately my path led me back to the family business of policing.
There are lots of different roles, even in policing itself, but I really enjoy the long-term challenges of Local Policing. I’ve built a relationship with my areas. I know the problems they’re having and enjoy working hard to solve them. My days are spent reviewing crimes that have happened in the area – seeing what needs following up, finding out about threats or tensions in the community to see how we can intervene, and keeping in touch with my team of officers to make sure they’ve got what they need to serve you.
Recently, in Old Swan, members of our community were sick and tired of reporting the same people time and time again for causing serious issues to residents and workers. We managed to go that extra bit further and use civil legislation to ultimately put a stop on their behaviour, imposing criminal behaviour orders that tells them what they can and can't do. Now, if the start up with same old behaviours, they can be sent to prison.
This month we also managed to put together some funding from several local partners (housing associations, charities, the proceeds of crimes) and invite community groups to a Dragon’s Den style event where they could bid for the funding. It’s always satisfying to see money get taken out of criminals’ hands and given to people who want to do something really positive with it.
A few specific areas within my hub have been vulnerable to higher crime than other areas, so we’ve been busy with what we call targeted ‘days of action’ - giving time to really focus on those areas. It’s more than just nicking offenders – it's doing things like street cleans, getting improvements put in –CCTV and street lighting. You’ve got to invest in an area if you want things to improve.
We really encourage people to use StreetSafe, where they report online if they don’t feel safe in area. Maybe it’s environmental issues like there not being enough street lighting, or abandoned house – but maybe there’s an area where they’re been harassed or followed. You can do it on our website anonymously: StreetSafe | Merseyside Police.
Thanks for taking the time to learn a bit about a local copper from your area. If you’re interested in more of what we get up to, come along and meet your team at one of the surgeries we have. You can find your next local one on the ‘Your Area’ of our website.
Stay safe,
Inspector Andy Lloyd.
