A man has been charged following reports of a disturbance at a flat in Birkenhead on Monday 30 December.
At around 12.45pm we received a report that a man in his 30s had been assaulted by another man at a flat on Hamilton Street.
The suspect then forced a woman in her 30s from the flat, who then managed to break free from the man and run back to the flat.
Police officers attended and while attempting to detain the suspect, he punched, kicked and bit officers before he was successfully detained.
Thomas Michael Dolan, 32 years, of Park Road South, Claughton was arrested and later charged with four counts of assault by beating of an emergency worker; attempted kidnap; intentional strangulation and possession of a Class B controlled drug (cannabis).
He was remanded into custody to appear at Liverpool Magistrates Court today (Tuesday 31 December).
Detective Inspector Andrew Schofield said: “Our officers turn up to work every single day to keep the communities of Merseyside safe.
“They know they may face unpredictable and sometimes dangerous situations in their efforts to protect the public, but there is never any excuse for physically or verbally abusing officers as they try to do their job.
“I’m sure the vast majority of law-abiding members of our communities would agree that assaults on police officers and other emergency workers is totally unacceptable.
“My message to those who carry out violence against police is simple: please remember, one day you or your families may need our help too. If anyone crosses that line, they can expect to face the full force of the law.”
