We have arrested a Liverpool man on suspicion of dangerous driving, drug driving and failing to stop following an incident in St Helens yesterday, Monday 17 February.
At around 3.45pm two officers in unmarked police vehicles spotted a Jaguar on James Roby Way which was travelling above the speed limit. The officers indicated for the driver to stop but the car was seen to drive through a red light at excess speed. It then continued along James Roby Way where it was in collision with the rear of a Vauxhall Astra.
As the damaged Jaguar continued and approached the roundabout for junction 7 of the M62 at Rainhill Stoops the officers attempted to carry out a tactical stop but the Jaguar mounted the pavement and overtook other vehicles queuing at the red light.
Due to the risk the driver was presenting to other road users the officers were able to successfully stop the car.
A 36-year-old man from Everton was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, driving otherwise in accordance with a licence, driving without insurance, failing to stop for police, two offences of failing to provide preliminary specimens, failure to provide evidential specimens and driving whilst unfit through drugs.
He is currently in custody.
Matrix Chief Inspector Stuart McIver said: “Thankfully on this occasion nobody was injured but clearly this could have had much more serious consequences if the driver had managed to get onto the wrong side of the motorway.
“It was thanks to the awareness and fast actions of our Matrix roads policing officers that we were able to stop the car and detain the driver so swiftly.
“Merseyside Police will not tolerate drivers who deliberately ignore the rules of the road, and we are committed to the prevention of serious injury and road death, to work towards Vision Zero – our strategy focused on driving down the amount of road traffic collisions in our regions and to lower the number of people killed and seriously injured on our streets.”
