At around 1am, we received a report of a collision involving a Grey Ford Focus car and a male pedestrian on Mather Avenue, near to the junction of Booker Avenue.
The pedestrian, 17, was taken to hospital with a head injury where he remains in a serious condition.
The driver of the vehicle was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by careless driving. He has been released under investigation pending further enquiries.
Sergeant Mark Milner from Merseyside Police Roads Policing said: “Our thoughts are with the family of the injured man and those involved in this road traffic collision.
“We have launched an investigation into the circumstances of this collision and would appeal to people who was in the area on Saturday morning who may have witnessed this collision, or has dash camera, CCTV or doorbell footage of the incident to please contact us.
