Teenager arrested in connection with electric bike robbery in Anfield

A teenager has been arrested following an electric bike robbery in Anfield Cemetery yesterday evening, Wednesday 16 July.

Just after 8pm we received a report a 17-year-old boy was attacked by two males who assaulted him and knocked him off his black and orange electric-assisted pedal bike in Anfield Cemetery on Priory Road, and then rode off with it towards Cherry Lane.

Members of the public pursued them, and one suspect was detained until police arrived at the scene. Following a search officers found two bags of cannabis on him.

The second suspect rode off with the stolen bike.

The victim sustained cuts and bruises to his head which didn’t require medical treatment.

A 17-year-old male was arrested on suspicion of robbery and being in possession of a controlled class B drug. He is still in police custody to be questioned.

An investigation has commenced to identify the second offender and enquires are ongoing to locate the stolen bike.

Detective Inspector Jay Halpin said: “This was a nasty assault where the two offenders threatened and assaulted the boy then stole his bike. We have made one arrest, and enquiries are ongoing to locate the other offender and the stolen bike.

“Through Operation Gears, Merseyside Police is taking firm and proactive action, seizing illegal bikes, arresting offenders, and increasing patrols in key areas to disrupt criminal networks and keep our communities safe. 

“The illegal use of two-wheeled vehicles such as e-bikes causes disruption and distress within communities, and our local policing teams run regular operations to deal with those who continue to cause danger and disorder on the region’s roads and open spaces.

“Since 1 January 2025, more than 500 illegal bikes and scooters have been seized across the region for reasons including illegal modification, no insurance, involvement in serious collisions, or use in criminal activity.

“The support of the public is a vital part of our efforts to stop criminals in their tracks, and stop them bringing intimidation, violence and misery into the heart of our communities.
