Officers have arrested two people and seized three vehicles following an incident in Thatto Heath on Saturday, 22 March.
At around 5.15pm, officers were called to Thatto Heath Park to reports of a suspected stolen scrambler bike being driven dangerously in the area. At 5.22pm, an officer caused the bike to stop on Thatto Heath Road, and detained the rider and passenger.
They were arrested as follows:
An 18-year-old male from Thatto Heath was arrested on suspicion of: Theft of a motor vehicle; Aiding and abetting dangerous driving; Possession of Class C drugs (Nitrous Oxide).
A 15-year-old male from Thatto Heath was arrested on suspicion of: Theft of a motor vehicle; Dangerous driving; Driving with no licence or insurance; and Drug driving.
Both were taken to a police station for questioning and have since been released under investigation. A scooter and further off ride bike were also seized following the search of an address, and have been forensically recovered.
St Helens Chief Inspector Jon Smith said: "This was an excellent, swift piece of police work which dealt with a dangerous situation before serious harm was caused. Members of the public were in the park enjoying the day, including families and young children, and we're keenly aware of the distress and risk caused by the reckless and illegal use of such bikes.
"With that in mind, I would encourage anyone who sees similar incidents to call police immediately, and as we did on Saturday, we can deploy a variety of tactics to ensure that those involved are safely stopped in their tracks. These can include our police dogs, the National Police Air Service (NPAS) helicopter, and specially trained Roads Policing officers.
"Ideally, we would identify and seize such vehicles before they are causing issues on the roads and our green spaces, so if you know where such bikes are being stored, come forward and we will take action."
