We are appealing for information following a fatal collision on the M53 earlier this morning.

At around 3.25am today (Monday 15 June), emergency services were called to Junction 4 at Clatterbridge following reports that a Toyota Yaris had been involved in a collision with a male pedestrian on the northbound carriageway.

Sadly, the man, aged in his 40s, was pronounced deceased at the scene. His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially trained Family Liaison Officers.

The driver of the car stopped at the scene.

Following inquiries, it was established that the man had been involved in a separate collision on the southbound carriageway just prior to the incident when his Skoda Fabia collided with the central reservation.

A full closure remains in place on both sides of the carriageway between Junctions 4 and 5 northbound and southbound to allow investigators to carry out their initial inquiries into the incident

Lead Investigating Officer, Detective Sergeant Andy Roper from our MATRIX Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: “My thoughts are with the man’s family at this tragic time and specially trained officers are supporting them.

“An investigation is underway to establish the full circumstances of what happened. Although this occurred in the early hours of the morning, we are still appealing for witnesses to come forward who may have information.

"If you were travelling on the M53, in either direction, between Junction 4 (Clatterbridge) and Junction 5 (Eastham), please check your front or rear dash cameras, even if you didn’t witness anything. Sometimes important footage is captured without the driver realising it and this could prove to be vital to our enquiries.

"Road closures will remain in place on both sides of the motorway whilst we carry out vital collision investigation work to provide answers for the man's family. If possible, I would ask that motorists find alternative routes and avoid the area. Thank you for your patience."

Anyone who witnessed the collision or captured the incident on CCTV or dashcam is asked to contact the SCIU on (0151) 777 5747, or email [email protected].

Alternatively, DM @MerPolCC or call @CrimestoppersUK on 0800 555 111, quoting reference 26000474896.
