We can confirm a man has been arrested following an incident in Wirral last night.

At around 7.50pm on Wednesday 10 June, we received a report that a man was driving a car erratically on Croft Drive, in Caldy.

Patrols attended but the driver failed to stop and following a pursuit the suspect collided with a police car on Cornelius Drive, in Pensby.

Two officers were assessed with one having an arm injury and the other was thankfully unharmed. Police dogs Ike and Dobbie were also inside the car but they were uninjured after being checked over by a vet.

Despite the collision, the suspect continued to drive away and eventually came to a stop near Arrowe Brook Road after a stock stick was used. He then tried to flee on foot but was detained nearby.

A 26-year-old man from Liscard has been arrested on suspicion of attempted section 18, dangerous driving, driving whilst unfit through drink/drugs, failing to stop, criminal damage and section 18 assault. He remains in custody.

Detective Chief Inspector Pete Stephenson said: “This was incredibly reckless by the driver who not only failed to stop for police but also endangered the safety of other road users through his erratic driving.

"During the incident, other drivers had to take evasive action to avoid a collision. He collided with a police car and finally went through a fence near to residential properties before coming to a stop.

“There would have been a number of motorists and pedestrians who witnessed this incident, so please come forward if you have any information to assist our ongoing investigation. Although we have a man in custody, we are still looking to speak to anyone who could assist.

“I also want to thank residents who came out of their homes and assisted our officers following the collision. Your support for them is appreciated and would have no doubt brought them comfort after they were involved in a serious collision. It’s only through sheer luck that they weren’t more seriously injured.

“There were also two police dogs inside the car and they were checked over by a vet and thankfully uninjured.”

If you witnessed this incident or have any information, you can call 101 or DM us on social media @MerPolCC quoting log number 993 of 10th June.
