A man has been sentenced to more than five years in prison after stabbing his father in Wirral last year.
Andrew Roberts, 37 years, appeared at Liverpool Crown Court today (Friday 19 June) after pleading guilty to Section 18 wounding with intent for the attack on his father inside a house in December last year.
In the afternoon of 16 December officers were called to an address on Big Meadow Road in Woodchurch, following reports a 56-year-old man had suffered an injury to his chest. He was taken to hospital for treatment which was not life threatening.
Roberts was located in the Rake Lane area and following an investigation he was charged with attempted murder.
However Roberts pleaded guilty to Section 18 assault which was refused by the Crown Prosecution Service and the case proceeded to trial last month which resulted in a hung jury.
Today Roberts, of Woodward Road in Rock Ferry, was sentenced for five and half years for the offence – Section 18 wounding with intent.
Detective Sergeant Ciara Cross said: “This is an awful case where Roberts attacked his own father with a knife which caused the victim to fear for his life from his own son. The emotional impact this has had on the victim has been extremely distressing for him.
“I hope Roberts uses the time behind bars to reflect on the severity of what he did, and the distress he has caused to his father.”
Detective Sergeant Ciara Cross added: “The use of knives can have devastating consequences, including domestic settings such as this.
“We are committed to removing anyone who stores, carries and uses weapons, through proactive use of stop and search powers, open land searches, warrants and education work alongside partners. We continue to seek out those involved in knife crime.”
