Woman arrested following serious collision in New Brighton

We have arrested a woman following a serious collision in New Brighton earlier today, Friday 5 June.

At around 11.30am, emergency services were called to a report of a collision where a cyclist had reportedly swerved to avoid a car and collided into a stationary van on Rowson Street.

The cyclist, a man in his 50s, has been taken to hospital. He is in a critical condition.

Following enquiries, a 65-year-old women from Wallasey has been arrested on suspicion of Causing serious injury by careless driving and Failing to stop at the scene of a collision. She has been taken to a police station for questioning.

The van driver stopped at the scene and is assisting officers with their enquiries. Rowson Street and the surrounding roads are currently closed, and we ask motorists to avoid the area and find an alternative route. We thank you for your patience while we deal with this incident.

Detective Sergeant Kurt Timpson, the Lead Investigating Officer from Merseyside Police's Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “Although a woman is in custody, we are still keen to gather as much dashcam and other footage as possible. Please check any devices and come forward if you live or work locally, or were passing the area around the time of the collision.

“Any help we receive, no matter how insignificant it may seem, could be vital as we build a picture of what happened.”
