We have arrested two men after our police dog tracked down two suspects who were reported to have taken 20 pieces of large timber from a construction site in St Helens last night (Sunday 17 May).
Just after 11.35pm we received a report that a group of men were stealing large lengths of timber from a site on Fleet Lane.
Officers and Police Dog Ziggy found the timber and a pair of gloves in a woodland near the site. PD Ziggy tracked down one of the men on Bromilow Road and later found another man hiding behind a bush in the front garden of a property on Meadow Lane.
Two men aged 44 and 48 from St Helens were arrested on suspicion of burglary and attempted theft.
They were taken to a police station in Merseyside where they remain in custody.
Inspector Lisa Seddon said: “The joint efforts of our officers and police dog Ziggy have secured two arrests and the recovery of several large pieces of timber in St Helens.
“I want to assure local residents and business owners that our officers in St Helens take these types of offences seriously. Such crimes can lead to the loss of revenue, expensive material and equipment.
“We are continuing to speak with witnesses in the area and analyse CCTV footage from the site which showed the suspects taking the timber.
“If you work or live near the site on Fleet Lane and have any CCTV footage of the incident from last night and hold any further information please contact police. This information could be vital to our investigation.”
